With all the madness going on in the world, thank god for the Digable Planets. Yesterday evening people from different places and different races lined up around the Woodward Theater in Cincinnati to witness one of the greatest hip-hop trios come together to take their fans on a nostalgic ride allowing everyone to leave their troubles behind for one night. They even brought a little treat with them, the cool cats Camp Lo opened the show to the crowds delight.
Even though the line was still wrapped around the building, the guys from the BX ripped through a medley of classics including “Coolie High”,”Black Nostaljack”,& the crowd pleaser “Luchini” with an intro sample that only true crate diggers could appreciate. Sonny Cheeba & Geechi Suede made Cincinnati feel like it was 97′ all over again and the Sold Out Crowd showed their love. After about a 45 minute wait filled with the DJ’s selection of obscure Jazz & Al Green cuts, it was the moment everyone was waiting for. The perfect intro cut,”Reunited ” by Peeches & Herb played as the 5 piece band took their positions.
Doodlebug, Ladybug, & Butterfly hit the stage like they haven’t missed a beat performing both familiar and non familiar tracks from their two albums. They started their set with the song “May 4th” and perfectly connected each song after that to let the crowd know that “it was good to be here” and that it was. Just when the night couldn’t get any better, the Brooklyn crew dashed into “Nickelbags” into”Jettin”into “9Wonder” before leaving us with “Rebirth of slick (cool like dat)”. They even came back for an encore to end the night on a perfect note. Still looking the same, well maybe a little gray hair in the beard of Butterfly, The Digable Planets can still do what many cannot. I mean the last time I checked, their last tour was 2005 and to come back and sell out shows all over is really saying something. Thank you Digable Planets for allowing us to escape our worries and problems….for at least one night.
